Новый год в России является главным, самым долгожданным праздником года. Существует много поверий, связанных с празднованием Нового года. Вот некоторые из них:
«Как Новый год встретишь, так его и проведешь»- гласит известная поговорка.
Поэтому прилагаются все силы, чтобы встретить его весело, с друзьями и родными.
Считается также, что самые сокровенные желания, загаданные в новогоднюю ночь, обязательно исполнятся в Новом году.
Главным новогодним персонажем  в России является Дед Мороз (аналог Санта Клауса). Приходит он не один, а со своей внучкой Снегурочкой.
Согласно традиции в доме устанавливается Новогодняя ёлка.
Празднование начинается около 11 часов вечера.
Семья садится за празднично накрытый стол, где в изобилии стоят мясные, рыбные блюда, всевозможные салаты, в том числе и салат Оливье, который стал традиционно праздничным блюдом в России в 70 годы XX века.
Это самые радостные и волнующие минуты года!
Самой знаменитой новогодней песенке уже более 100 лет.
Hовогодние каникулы стали для большинства россиян дополнительным отпуском.

New Year's celebration is the most important holiday in Russia.  It is the most long-awaited holiday of the year.  There are a lot of russian people's beliefs related to the celebration of the New Year.  Here are a few of them:
The Russian people say:  "The way the New Year is celebrated will affect how you will spend it". This is why people use all efforts to start it joyfully with friends and family.
It is also believed that wishes made at the New Year's night will become true during the year.
The most important New Year's character in Russia is Dyed Moroz (Grandfather Frost), who is the Russian version of Santa Claus. He is accompanied by his granddaughter Snegurochka (made of snow).
At around 11 PM, the family gathers at the holiday table, and the celebration begins. There is plenty of food: fish and meat dishes, and different kinds of salad including the salad Olivye. This became a traditional holiday dish in Russia starting from the1970's.
Five minutes before midnight, all television channels and radio stations transmit the New Year's greetings of the Russian president.  Sharply at midnight the signal of exact time is transmitted (in Russia it is the striking of the ancient Kremlin's chiming clock, Kuranty) and the national anthem is played. Cheering with champagne, everybody wishes each other a happy new year. These are the most joyful and emotional minutes of the year.
Lately, the celebration of the Old New Year's is growing in popularity.  It is considered an independent holiday, as a way to prolong the fascination of the holiday. It's another chance to meet friends and light the New Year's tree one more time!
