Are you having trouble studying for your exams? Do you go blank as soon as you look at the first review question? Holding your notebook against your head in hope that the knowledge soaks into your brain isn't going to help you. It's time to brush up on your study skills. Here are some Do's and Don'ts.
Don't: Attempt not to study on a comfortable bed or sofa. Falling asleep while in the middle of studying isn't uncommon
Do: Take frequent breaks to give your mind rest. It is also important to take breaks in order to stay alert. Taking a 10 minute break in between studying will give your brain time to adjust to all of the information.
Don't: Study with a friend that you know you shouldn't study with. Both of you will lost precious studying time.
Do: When it comes time for memorization, don't try knocking out all of your flash cards at once. As an alternative, memorize actively instead of passively. Try using mnemonic devices to aid in memorizing rather than just reading something over and over again. It also helps to create some sort of picture or idea in your mind. If you are an audio learner, try repeating what you're memorizing out loud so you can hear it.
Do: Set aside specific times to do homework, study, and socialize. Set a schedule or to do list that you know you will stick to. By checking things off your schedule or to do list, the burden of all the work that has to be done will be lifted. Time management is key.
Don't: Try not to cram for the exam the night before. Even though many say it works and helps them, the benefit at the end isn't so great. Study a little every day or right after the class ends so what you leaned sticks with you.
