As part of popular trends, more and more people find themselves piercing different parts of their body. Piercings range from ears to face to anything that the piercer is willing to do.
But why go through all the pain and spend the cash? Maybe it’s because you like the way it looks, you just want to be different, or the piercing itself means something to you, whether it’s personal, cultural, or religious.
Some may choose to get piercings to symbolize a milestone.
Christina Plata, a 17-year-old senior at Nyack High School, says she got a piercing to mark her 16th birthday, which was an important day for her.
Others view piercings as a personal style choice. Christina Ferrara, a 17-year-old at Clarkstown North High School, discussed getting her belly button ring in addition to multiple piercings. “I like the way they look. Yeah, it is pretty painful but after the first couple you kind of just get used to it. I think there are so many different reasons for piercings: to fit in, or you like they way they look.”
Piercings represent a bold style statement, but they are not as permanent as tattoos; those not willing to commit to a life with inked skin can still achieve an edgy look.
Kristin Ludwig, a junior at North Rockland High School, says, “I get them because they aren’t as intense as tattoos and my parents aren’t as insecure about them. And I love them. I think they’re a way of expressing yourself like anything else. I have gotten them in my ear’s tragus, cartilage, and rook.”
So for whatever reason you do decide to get pierced, make sure you go to a reliable, safe place where the tools are constantly sterilized.
