Students returning to SUNY Rockland after summer break might notice something missing; Building C is gone. The abandoned brick building between the Student Union and the Technology Building was demolished over the summer.

Building C was completely vacant and the inside of the building was already in tatters. Insulation and wires hung from the ceiling and many of the windows were broken. But until last winter it was a relatively stable structure.

That all changed when a snowplow crashed into a support column on the corner of the building rendering it on the verge of collapse.

After a temporary fence was constructed around Building C, a construction crew demolished the structure and removed the rubble.

The process took several weeks during Summer Sessions I and II, but after many dumpster loads of debris had been removed, nothing was left but dirt.

Extensions to the cement paths that run through the quad are being constructed in place of building C.

The extended paths will provide easier access to the Cultural Arts Center and help relieve some of the congestion that forms on the quad at times.

The demolishing of Building C is a major victory for students. What was once an eyesore and a hindrance to students will soon be a usable open space, where outdoor activities can take place.

The destruction of the building also removes a safety hazard as well as a prime target for vandalism.
