What makes a great gym? Is it the TVs that are attached to the elliptical machines, or is it the availabiltiy of different weights?

Maybe it is the social environment that draws one in to the gyms around the area, such as Planet Fitness and New York Sports Club. But is it really worth it to pay monthly fees when a wonderful fitness facility is available right on campus?

The SUNY Rockland weight room, located on the first floor of the Fieldhouse, may not be as exclusive and fancy as local gyms, but students find that it is still a great place to work out.

“I use the tredmills everyday,” said student Regina Mogilevskaya. “They’re a great way to stay in shape and keep your wallet full.”

The facility is free as long as you show your college ID.

While some use the gym on a daily basis, others have never taken a trip down to the weight room.

“I just can’t seem to find enough time between classes and work to do any kind of workout routine,” commented Hanna Sender, carrying an armful of books.

Some students are not even aware that the gym exists. Coaches suggest that the students’ disregard of the gym facilities is due to a lack of advertising. Others argue that the gym is too small and that some of the machines are old and may not be working. Updates to the gym are in the works.

“[We are currently] in the process of ordering new dumbbells for the weight room,” said Wilkenson Francois, member of the RCC campus improvement committee.

One thing that the campus gym has that most private gyms do not, is an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool. This heated swimming pool has a supervisor who monitors behavior and a lifeguard to ensure safety.

In addition to the weight room and pool, some students take advantage of the indoor basketball courts, track, volleyball court, and outdoor tennis courts.

RCC also offers interesting classes such as yoga and pilates for gym credit. Many find this more economical than paying for private lessons.

Sophomore Ross Newton said, “I think this gym is one of the best kept secrets in Rockland, and more people should take advantage of the spacious facilities.”
