Taming the Bulge – is it Really Necessary?

Do people still make New Year’s resolutions or is it just a thing of the past? If they do, can they make a realistic resolution? Will they actually stick with their resolution or are they just setting up themselves for failure? 

“New Year’s resolutions are useful, even when they fail,” and “resolution tradition dates back to early Babylonians” wrote Jack G. Hardy in The Miami Herald (Jan. 4, 2010).

Past generations assumed that the things that you do on Jan. 1 affected you for the entire year. Today’s generation believes that the new year is an opportunity to create a change by starting over again.

A new year is the start of new beginnings. This is the time when we create new memories by trading bad habits for good ones.    

Taming the bulge, enjoying life more, getting out of debt, spending more time with family, and quitting smoking are common New Year’s resolutions but are they practical
“Going to the gym was my New Year’s resolution for 2010. On the first full week of the year I was going to start. On that Monday I pulled into the parking lot and it was full. So I went home and haven’t been back since,” said RCC student, Joe Feger. 

This is the path that many of us have taken. The smallest setback can lead us to lack motivation and fall into a hole of laziness. Setting realistic goals and taking baby steps will boost your perseverance.    

After interviewing several students on campus I found a mixed review of this years’s New Year resolutions. However, the majority of students that were interviewed agreed that a New Year’s resolution can change a person’s perspective on life. 

“I believe [that creating a] New Year’s resolution is an opportunity to evaluate and reconstruct aspects of your life that you felt were lacking or in need of change from the previous year,” said student Kimberley Lindemann. 

For those of you who think that setting New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time, I beg you to reconsider. You will see your life dramatically transform once you take the steps toward your goals.   

Not too long ago I also had trouble achieving my goals, but now I’ve seen the benefits of setting a New Years resolution. I went after my goals and achieved them, and I’m setting more as time goes by. 

New Year’s resolutions make us aware of our goals, how to achieve them, where we want to go, and what we want to do with our lives. Setting a manageable resolution can do wonders for the organization of your life.
