So let's just say that you missed the Black Friday rush but you still want to buy some of the hottest technology on the market, what should you do? Well don't fret; though you may have missed some awesome sales, the merchandise hasn't gone anywhere and it will surely go on sale again closer to Christmas.
Recently released are a massive amount of new gadgets—photography gear, HDTVs, video games—all for bargain prices.
Cameras
To start off the endless list of new technology are cameras. Most students at RCC either have a digital camera and many are probably interested in purchasing a new one. For general macroshots, point and shoot cameras are ideal, but professional close up pictures require a DSLR camera, which can run $500 or more easily.
For those who are looking for a simple point and shoot camera, the Kodak Z or C series are recommended. The Kodak Easyshare M1033 is a very inexpensive camera despite its many features. This great buy can be purchased at Best Buy in the Palisades Mall or Office Depot in Nanuet have sales this time of the year.
This camera is straightforward, stylish, and takes great pictures. The camera has 10 Megapixels, although the megapixel number is irrelevant unless you plan to blow up or crop the photograph. Overall if you are searching for a camera that will take crisp and reliable shots, a camera that is very inexpensive, and one that can fit in your pocket with relative ease, then the Easyshare M1033 is made for you.
For higher quality needs, the Kodak Easyshare will not meet the high standards; you need something with more power. A camera to suite your needs would be the Panasonic Lumix ZR1. It is a dream camera.
With a price-tag of $240-$248, there is no doubt that this camera supersedes the point and shoot cameras. The ZR1 has an 8x optical zoom, as compared to the 3x zoom the Kodak offers.
This piece of equipment also boasts a 12 megapixel sensor for clearer pictures with the capability of cropping or enlarging photos to any size. In addition to the upgraded features, this megazoom camera has an HD movie mode for capturing those great scenes at 30 frames per second.
The only downfall to this camera is that it is nowhere to be found in Rockland; it can be purchased online or in Manhattan. There are two stores known to carry this camera: B&H on 9th Avenue and Beaches Camera on 5th Avenue.
If you want an even more professional camera, look into the Canon EOS or the Nikon 3000. For the entry-level professional these are ideal cameras. They price at around $500 to $700 if you buy the DSLR package that includes the lens and kit.
Before you commit to buying a camera be sure to research them on the internet. For great video and user reviews, Cnet.com is a good source to turn to.
TV's
Now if you are anything like my family, you obviously have a Television in every room, except maybe the bathroom and kitchen. Some TV's are absolutely stunning; but they are well beyond the cash range most RCC students would be willing to drop this holiday season.
Televisions today revolve around the expectation of full HD quality. Of course you need a cable hook-up with HD channels to experience the complete high definition experience. The newer 1080p refers to 1080 lines to vertical resolution, as opposed to the 720p slightly cheaper HDTVs offer. But beyond the technicalities, which televions are the best?
If you want a TV that is relatively inexpensive but provides remarkable quality, look into the Samsung (SKU: 9230708). This 32" 720p TV has two HDMI outputs and a PC input all for a little less than $400 after your rebate.
If you're looking for a TV which will turn put your room smack on the 50 yard line of Giants stadium, Panasonic should be just right (SKU: 9239228). This 42" 1080p LCD TV only costs $649 after the rebate.
But the 52" 1080p TV from Sony, which costs $1500 after rebate, will have you thinking you are the Giants.
Visit your favorite electronic store and ask for a tour by a sales clerk.
If you're interested in the high quality, expect to give away a few more Benjamin Franklins.
Video Games
If video games are your niche, there is no better time to start your shopping.
According to several video-game columnists, the top games out are Assassins Creed II, and the new Super Mario Bros.
If you have the Wii, consider Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, DJ Hero, Killzone II , Tekken 6, and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.
If you're a gamer, then you probably know that they cost around $50-$65 a pop unless you catch a Christmas sale, but don't be concerned; put it on your wish list and hope Santa still has your favorite video game in stock...ing.
