Leonardo DiCaprio plays an "extractor" named Cobb in this summer's hit movie, "Inception." Along with his assistant, or "point-man" Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), he steals ideas through people's dreams. When Cobb and his team fail to steal the idea of a company CEO named Saito (Ken Watanabe), Saito turns around and offers Cobb a task to complete; to implant an idea into the mind of Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), the son of a competing company's CEO.
The characters created for the story are also very interesting, which is largely due to the talent of the actors and director.
The story primarily focuses on Cobb's inner struggles and how that affects the team's task, but it's so integral to the plot that the lack of back story for the other characters is forgivable.
The movie takes itself seriously, but there are some clever quips and moments which add substance and personality to the supporting characters.
Nolan is unabashed in his use of traditional film making. Some scenes (especially those zero-gravity and revolving hallway scenes) are filmed similarly to movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" (of which he acknowledged in an interview). This approach definitely make the scenes a little more natural and just as entertaining to watch.
DiCaprio, whose acting has greatly improved since his "Titanic" days, delivers another fine performance.
He presents Cobb as confident, incredibly intelligent, and very professional, but also rough and disturbed. Gordon-Levitt also does very well as Arthur, being very professional while not being too uptight.
He's as intelligent as Cobb, which adds a closeness between both characters that they present very well.
"Inception" is another Christopher Nolan hit. Its scope, acting, and action are all intelligently crafted and directed, despite a very complex story and setup.
It's a movie event that livens up this summer's lukewarm reception, with complexity that challenges the audience and action that is masterfully crafted with suspense.
