Members of the college community participated in a Wear Red Day on Feb. 11, by wearing red shirts, ties, and even red nail polish, to raise awareness of the impact heart disease has on women.
Students also raised more than $200 in small donations for the American Heart Association by selling paper hearts. The hearts were later posted outside the Office of Student Involvement.
“The number of hearts the Student Activities Board sold today was absolutely breathtaking,” said Maegan Nevins, Chair of the Student Activities Board.
“It was heartwarming to see so many RCC students taking the time to honor those we have lost and those who are still battling this [disease].”
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. An average of 1.1 million people will have a heart attack each year and more than 500,000 will not live to tell the tale.
Wear Red Day is organized by the American Heart Association as part of its project, “Go Red For Women,” that aims to raise awareness of heart disease in women.
Heart disease is a broad term for different diseases affecting the heart. These include diseases of the blood vessels and birth defects that damage the heart.
According to mayoclinic.com, “The term ‘heart disease’ is often used interchangeably with ‘cardiovascular disease’ — a term that generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke.”
The best way to reduce the risk of heart disease is by living a healthy lifestyle, the Mayo Clinic says. This includes not smoking, staying physically active, eating healthy foods, and maintaining a healthy weight.
And there’s more to gain from the Mayo Clinic’s recommendations than just a healthy heart.
As student Alyssa Bachner remarked, “Healthy eating not only will prevent me from having heart disease down the road, but will also keep me in perfect shape for bikini season!”
