Spring time is aproaching and baseball is on the minds of SUNY Rockland students. The team has been training hard since early September, in an effort to erase last year’s unfortunate mishap from their minds.
Coach Joseph Zeccardi is working the team hard. “My main goal is improve from last year, we have a lot of talent and we need to utilize it well. We can do it; we just need to play good, smart baseball.”
Zeccardi also stresses the importance of defense out on the field, saying it is what will “make or break” their season. “We scored alot last year, but unfortunately gave it back up on the field.”
On the other hand, Coach is confident in the team’s pitching roster, comprised of returning sophomores Ryan Fasano, Jesus Hernandez, Johnny Wong, Andrew Wanamaker, Eric Kamp, Ryan Scanlan, Pete Lompado, and Josh Cintron. The team is looking to these players, as well as other returning sophomores, to act as leaders for the team.
“Most of our freshmen are currently backup players, they need to prove to us that they are ready to play, and when the time comes, they too will become our starters and leaders,” Zeccardi said.
The Hawks are gearing up for a tough season facing fellow conference members Dutchess, Sullivan, Orange, Westchester, and Ulster counties.
When asked which team was the biggest threat to the Hawks, Coach Zeccardi said, “I definitely have to give credit to Dutchess County, because they did win the conference last
year.”
Nevertheless, Zeccardi is careful to not let his team slip up. “All of the teams in our conference have great potential, and come the end of the season we are all fighting for the same thing, so it’s important to give our best in every single game.”
“The guys have matured a lot, and the cohesion between them is amazing,” he said. He believes that this, along with the team’s continued hard work, will bring them success.
Another thing the team is trying to change is the deserted bleachers during the Hawks’ games.
“Sure I understand, students have studies and other things to worry about, and spring weather isn’t always the greatest,” Zeccardi said. “But more fan turnout would be awesome for the guys.”
