In honor of the holiday season, the Student Government Association organized the “Thanks for Giving Thanksgiving Fashion Show and Dance” on Tuesday Nov. 24.

The event took place in the Student Union from 6-10 P.M. Tickets were on sale for $5.00 per person, while refreshments were free of charge.

The occasion opened with a fashion show, which had male and female models. The styles ranged from casual to formal wear, and even included ‘what to’ and ‘what not to wear.’ As the models made their way down the runway in groups of two and three, the audience whistled, hooted and even cheered on those who sported ‘what not to wear.’

Clothing styles varied from prom dresses to pajama pants and one pieced sportswear.  A crowd favorite was the garbage bag sported by freshman, Zehra Sheikh. She paraded down the runway, accenting her outfit with a silver belt and gray high top boots, making it look trendy.

Each segment of the show was closed with a walk by the secretary of the Student Government, Shenee Lowers, escorted by Student Government President, Tarik Abdelqader.  Lowers, the main planner of the event, organized everything from the lighting and the DJ to the great food and the after-party.

Following the fashion show was a dance that was a complete hit among the attending students. A typical Thanksgiving meal was served as part of the refreshments, which consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie, apple cider and much more.
From the outside of the Student Union, it seemed as though RCC had its very own night club as the beats vibrated through the Quad.

Freshman Tommy Nguen, who had late night classes that evening commented, “while I was walking by I had no idea what was going on... I saw lights flashing, people dancing, and felt the ground shaking... I had to check it out for myself.”

The music, which varied from Sean Paul to Michael Jackson, was blasting as everyone danced the night away. Just when things started to heat up on the dance floor, former Student Government President Josh Matthew arrived, only to be swarmed by screaming fans.

Needless to say, with the amount of support the event received and the attention it drew, the evening was yet another success for the SGA and RCC. The students agreed that they would be looking forward to next year’s Thanksgiving event, especially the dance.

Lindsay Buteux told Outlook, “The models looked great, especially their cute poses at the end of the runway, the turkey was right on point, and the dancing of the participants was wild and so unexpected, but still great.”

This occasion was truly one of the greatest ways to hold a charity event and is one of the highlights of the fall semester here at RCC.
